  Fermenter DECHEMA

Five members of the Schwaneberg group, Lina Weber, Kristin Rübsam, Anna Joelle Ruff, Felix Jakob and Johannes Schiffels, have participated at the DECHEMA summer school Biotransformations 2017. The summer school introduced the interdisciplinary field of whole-cell- and enzyme-mediated biotransformations to outstanding PhD students, Post-Docs and junior group leaders. Central topics included the discovery and engineering of biocatalysts, expression systems, catalyst evolution, large-scale screening systems, reaction engineering and efficient downstream processes, which were comprehensively introduced through lectures given by 25 high-ranking experts from academia and industry including Professor Schwaneberg. The number of participants was limited to 58, thereby enabling close interactions of the young academics with the experts. The participants contributed posters to present their work, which were additionally highlighted by 2 minute speed-lectures. Lina and Kristin presented their work on anchor peptides for polymer binding and functionalization, whereas Anna Joelle introduced the topic of efficient phosphate recovery from agro waste streams by enzyme, strain, and process engineering. Felix highlighted the recently published technology platform of biofunctional microgel fertilizers for controlled foliar delivery of nutrients to plants. Johannes presented recent progress on the in vitro reconstitution of initial saffron biosynthetic pathway steps.
